The Effect of Spouse Abuse on the Problem Drinking of the Elderly - Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Depression -

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of spouse abuse and depression on problem drinking of the elderly. Also, this study examined whether there is a mediating effects of depression between spouse abuse and problem drinking. An analysis was conducted on 5,456 the elderly from the data of the ¡®2013 Korean Welfare Panel Study¡¯. The major findings were as follows. First, the more spouse abuse the elderly experienced, they suffered higher level of problem drinking. Second, the more spouse abuse the elderly underwent, the higher level of depression they suffered. Third, the higher level of depression of the elderly led the higher level of problem drinking. Finally, spouse abuse had direct and indirect effects on problem drinking, but indirect effects did not have statistical significance. Based on the results, the implications for social work practice were suggested.
